ABSTRACT

Artificial intelligence (‘AI’), with its capability to perform tasks which require human cognition, analyze vast datasets, and make informed decisions, is restructuring the way in which we safeguard and manage information. As AI continues to evolve swiftly, it becomes crucial to address concerns regarding accessibility, transparency, ethics and accountability, prioritize robust anonymization protocols and secure data handling practices to safeguard individual privacy and prevent discriminatory outcomes. This paper delves into the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence in India, exploring the government’s growing emphasis on AI development under the banner of “AI for All”. This research focuses on the ethical and regulatory challenges posed by the use of AI in India, particularly concerning data privacy, inclusivity, and the management of personal information. It examines the intersection of AI and data protection laws and the need for comprehensive guidelines to address the ‘collection, processing, and storage’ of personal data. This paper aims to scrutinise the balance between leveraging AI for progress and the societal implications that it entails. Additionally, the author aims to recommend solutions, focusing on efforts to harness AI’s potential while mitigating associated risks, emphasizing on transparency, diversity etc. and seeks to contribute to the discourse on shaping a robust and inclusive AI governance framework in India.
